        David Colwell

        Director Innovation Lab, Tricentis

David Colwell has been in the testing industry for nearly 10 years. He started out as a data entry grunt, where he rapidly got sick of the repetitive work, and discovered a test automation tool, Win Runner from a conversation with someone in the testing team. He then automated his daily job and was subsequently given notice. However, the test manager took him under his wing and taught him everything there is to know about testing and test automation. This experience prepared him to become Automation Mentor for One Patch. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as a Technical test lead at DX Solutions, a second-time BRW Fast 100 company. Over the course of the next 5 years, David got promoted to Head of QA at DX Solutions, with a team of over 85 test engineers, leads and managers. After leaving DX Solutions, he got hired by Tricentis, a start-up based in Austria to lead the APAC technical division as Lead Solution Architect. Tricentis recently received $US165m in venture capital, after being named Leader by both Gartner and Forrester in their 2016 Service Virtualisation and testing automation segments.

Rethinking Data Visualization in Testing (Who Are You Going to Believe – Me or Your Own Eyes?)

        Keith Klain, Tekmark Global
Perception is reality: How we “see” things influences our feelings about them and guides our decision-making process… whether we realize it or not. Matching perception with reality should be a primary objective of the information produced from testing software – but frequently, our tools and methods let us down and often lead us astray. Explore different models of “seeing” systems and quality, and learn how advancements in modeling and machine learning may soon be helping us bridge the gap between our perception and reality.

Load Testing – What’s the Point?

        Tim Koopmans, Tricentis
Load testing is the act of simulating demand on a system and measuring it—but measuring it for what exactly? What’s the point?  This workshop explores the pointy end of this question with the handy mnemonic SPEARS. Learn how load testing can be used to poke at Scalability, Performance, Elasticity, Availability, Reliability and even Security issues, and also how to take a stab at solving them in your production systems. Humans learned to throw spears at woolly mammoths thousands of years ago; this session will revive your innate spear-throwing abilities in the context of a modern web.

When You Say Context, Does That Include Me?

            Ash Coleman, Credit Karma
The notion of Context Driven Testing has spawned conversations about how much context is valuable… but software testers tend to focus mostly on context in testing. We very rarely extend our thinking about context beyond our test strategy. Have we ever sat back and thought, how much of this context is about me? Come explore the context of the individual as it pertains to the overall quality of the product.

Doing excellent testing is one thing; ensuring it has a real impact is another. Business leaders expect QA teams to deliver results transparently and communicate them in a manner that they can understand. But do we really understand the reports that we are being asked to deliver and the value they are providing? How do we know what metrics we should monitor and what decisions should be made from those metrics? This workshop explains how to design reports that highlight your achievements and tell a story which resonates with executives.

In American folklore, Sasquatch is an elusive, ape-like creature infrequently seen at the boundaries of wilderness and civilization. In the software realm, we have our own version of Sasquatch: that irritating, difficult-to-find intermittent issue occurring in a complex system. In this session, Paul will explain how applying the concept of periodic automation can increase your chances of hunting down these elusive targets, using real-world examples from his own experience. You’ll learn the basics of applying periodic automation to find issues outside of typical event boundaries, how the approach relates to High-Volume Automated Testing (HiVAT) and how it can help you avoid desensitization to failures.

Manual SAP testing is simply too slow and too risky for the modern SAP architectures which enable digital transformation. As enterprises move to S/4HANA, Agile, and the cloud, manual SAP testing approaches are inevitably going to be sunset—just like SAP ECC itself. Manual testing simply can’t provide the fast feedback required as increasingly complex and interconnected SAP systems are updated at a much more frequent pace. Join this session to learn what’s needed to modernize SAP testing.

                          Jeff Wilkinson, Accenture
The testing industry is flooded with doomsday predictions: “The TCoE is dead! Testers will not be needed in the future! Robots will replace testers!” While there is no question that today’s technologies have driven the evolution of the job, it is increasingly evident that successfully leveraging them will only extend the need for skilled testers. We are rapidly infusing bots, artificial intelligence and machine learning into quality processes – but doing so meaningfully requires a sound quality strategy and skilled testers at the helm. Join us to hear about Accenture’s “Touchless Testing” approach, which employs these concepts. We’ll explore what all this means for the future of testing and what today’s testers must do in order to stay relevant.
