Load Testing: What’s the Point?

Ivan Vanderbyl, Tricentis
Load testing is the act of simulating demand on a system and measuring it—but measuring it for what exactly? What’s the point? This workshop explores the pointy end of this question with the handy mnemonic SPEARS. Learn how load testing can be used to poke at Scalability, Performance, Elasticity, Availability, Reliability and even Security issues, and also how to take a stab at solving them in your production systems. Humans learned to throw spears at woolly mammoths thousands of years ago; this session will revive your innate spear-throwing abilities in the context of a modern web.

The Convergence of RPA and Software Test Automation

Wayne Ariola, Tricentis
At its core, RPA is ultimately the same as software test automation. Both automatically exercise applications to make repetitive work faster, less burdensome, and more accurate. In many respects, RPA is actually simpler than software test automation. Yet, while software testing is commonly an underappreciated discipline, RPA was recently declared the fastest-growing market in enterprise software. Is a convergence inevitable? And how would it impact the future of RPA, test automation, and the larger category of “enterprise automation”?

Why SDETs Don’t Test

John Reber, Agiltima
There is a perceived need that SDETS are required to meet the demands of modern agile delivery approaches such as Continuous Delivery. Are SDETs really creating an uplift in defect detection and a subsequent reduction in buggy software? And if not, why? A recent case study of a large government digital transformation program found that the approach to testing in a CD environment needs to change, but we don’t yet have the right balance of technical and creative testing. This session will propose some solutions and initiate a discussion with the audience.

John Reber has been working in test roles in the UK for nearly 20 years across a number of industries and on some ground breaking projects such as BBC iPlayer. Most recently, John built a QA practice consisting of 100+ testers on a large government digital transformation and implemented the SAFe approach. The programme also transitioned to a Continuous Deployment approach which proved very challenging for the test team and the programme as a whole.

Microservices solve problems like scalability and they allow to innovate faster. The downside of this approach is the amount of services we need to deploy and the integration efforts when connecting these services. Agile Doesn’t Require More Testing or Faster Testing—It Requires BETTER Testing

Leandro Melendez, Señor Performo
The old ways of just trying to automate many things and trying to keep up and survive through the constant changes that appear sprint by sprint does not work anymore (if it ever did). We must change our ways and test smarter. Not faster not more, but better. This applies not only to performance and load testing, but to all QA practices. Join this session to hear Senor Performo’s thoughts on how to evolve traditional testing practices to progressive automation at multiple levels.

SAP Test Data Best Practices

Dennis Kallies, Akquinet Cubit
Testing an ERP is all about the test data. The testing dimension of individual software is spread over code, system functionalities and processes. The processes and code in SAP are often similar so that testing must be focused on functional requirements with as much test data as possible. This session describes best practices in test preparation and test automation for SAP systems and provides some insights in efficient solutions with Tricentis Tosca.

René van Veldhuijzen, Squerist
Many test automation efforts these days are struggling or failing because they started off the wrong way. For success, it’s imperative to start with the “Why” and build a solid architecture. This session begins by exploring the “Why”: which discussions on technical aspects, organizational aspects, test aspects and preconditions will have to take place and which decisions will have to be made at the start of a test automation implementation. In the second part, we zoom in on the test automation architecture: what is it, how do you create and maintain it, and how do you ensure it’s robust.

Automation is typically the process of creating a framework that supports UI and API tests. However, can be difficult to actually predict the outcome of automated tests in terms of calculated outputs. You could calculate the expected outcomes manually, but that takes weeks. The “Great Debate”: How Automation Impacts Jobs

Wolfgang Platz, Tricentis, Jeff Wilkinson, Accenture & Ramesh Pai, Wipro
In polite conversation moderated by Wayne Ariola, technologists focus on how automation improves employee morale by relieving workers from boring, repetitive tasks. They paint the picture of a not-so-distant future where automation magically completes that work that everyone dreads, allowing humans to focus on creative, interesting, and value-added tasks. But is this too optimistic? If you ask a CFO about why they are investing in automation, it’s clear that the ROI is driven by “productivity “ and ultimately the reduction of headcount—not employee happiness.
It’s time to take an honest look at the true impact that automation has on the workforce. This all-star panel will explore questions such as:
• Does automation truly replace jobs—or does it help the worker achieve more?
• If jobs are truly shifted, what do these jobs look like?
• How can you work with (or without) automation to avoid becoming obsolete?
• What can you do now to prepare for the shift?
