How Experian transformed test automation to support its health business

Company overview

Experian is a global data and technology company that powers opportunities for people and businesses around the world. Experian is helping to redefine lending practices, uncover and prevent fraud, simplify healthcare, deliver digital marketing solutions, and gain deeper insights into the automotive market, all using a unique combination of data, analytics, and software. It operates across 32 countries and a range of markets, including financial services, healthcare, automotive, agrifinance, insurance, and more.

Andres De La Vega is the Director of Intelligent Automation at Experian Health and has been with Experian for 12 years. The Experian Health business unit provides solutions for revenue cycle management, identity management, patient engagement, and care management. De La Vega oversees two teams. One is dedicated to automation of client-facing applications using Tricentis products, including Tricentis Tosca, Tricentis NeoLoad, Tricentis Data Integrity, and Tricentis qTest. The other team is responsible for RPA and AI.

Challenges

  • Reliance on manual testing made it difficult to scale.
  • Onboarding and upskilling testers were problematic without a user-friendly tool.
  • Limited time and resources to support a migration to test automation.

Switching from manual to test automation

About six years ago, Experian made the switch from manual testing processes using Micro Focus tools to Tricentis Tosca for test automation. Experian found that it is easier and faster to scale with Tosca because it is a user-friendly tool. Tosca allows Experian to onboard more resources quickly and its model-based architecture makes it simple to upskill new testers.

“The learning curve is very small. Most people quickly adapt to using Tosca because it’s very user friendly. It’s easy for them to start working and deliver results in just a couple of months for most of them, even though they don’t have all of the expertise or skill sets. The transition has been really smooth,” says De La Vega.

Experian worked with Tricentis Professional Services to support the migrations to Tosca and qTest because it did not have the time or resources.

“It was amazing to work with Professional Services. We had the opportunity to have an expert onsite for a couple of weeks, and we were able to have everything ready to go by the end of that time,” says De La Vega.

Tosca accelerates client-facing applications and modernization

Experian uses Tosca for 12 projects and NeoLoad for some of those projects. The projects encompass a combination of APIs, UI, and client-facing applications.

“We have projects that we have thousands of APIs fully automated. It’s been really helpful because if you think about somebody manually testing thousands of APIs, every single sprint is so time consuming,” says De La Vega. “It’s been a great relief for the time that we can save with everything fully implemented using Tosca.”

Experian acquired a client facing application a few years ago that relied on manual testing with no automation. The application had many defects and received customer complaints. De La Vega’s team implemented Tosca and within one month the application had zero issues in production and saw improvements in client satisfaction and its SLAs.

Experian also conducted an app migration and modernization project using Tosca. The app had thousands of APIs, making it challenging to test all of them.

“We were able to automate 95% of the testing for that particular project. It was the biggest migration that we ever had,” says De La Vega. “We had everything up and running with a more than 90% plus success rate on the test execution, which is really good. We normally try to be at least 80 to 85%, and this specific project got even better than that.”

The project led to dedicated resources being allocated to De La Vega’s team due to the release confidence, minimization of risk, and success metrics his team saw with the app migration and modernization.

qTest streamlines and integrates test management processes

Experian is in the process of migrating from Zephyr to qTest which it hopes to complete by the end of its fiscal year. The end goal is to fully integrate with Tosca and the rest of the Tricentis ecosystem.

De La Vega says that the qTest and Tosca integration will reduce miscommunication and save a lot of time because the organization has had problems with people using Zephyr in too many different ways rather than the very organized process using qTest.

“I think qTest is going to really streamline the processes that we have across the organization with everybody using exactly the same tools and processes rather than the 20 different flavors and combinations with Zephyr,” says De La Vega.

Achieving scale and time savings with test automation

With Tricentis, Experian has modernized its testing with automation, allowing teams to save time and focus on more important areas of the business that improve client satisfaction and deliver results.

De La Vega says that by using Tricentis test automation, he has seen an increase in his team’s capacity and job satisfaction. By shifting from performing tedious, repetitive manual tasks to more strategic roles, his team can now use their time for more learning and training.

Experian saved more than 20,000 hours in six months using Tosca, equating to almost $1 million dollars in savings for its fiscal year. Projects that would take a tester one to two weeks to do with manual testing a full regression now take 20 to 30 minutes with Tosca test automation.

Moving forward, Experian is looking for more ways to use Tosca in different areas across the organization, such as human resources and marketing, to automate some of the processes and onboard more people.

“Experian is a big company and is growing very fast. So having a robust process and tools that we can scale is definitely going to help us to continue growing as an organization and also be able to deliver great results as we’re getting more acquisitions and bigger projects,” says De La Vega.
