VodafoneZiggo accelerates time to market and ensures quality with Tricentis solutions

Company overview

In today’s hyper-competitive telecommunications industry, quality and speed must go hand-in-hand. VodafoneZiggo, one of the largest telecom providers in the Netherlands, recognized this dual challenge and turned to Tricentis solutions to deliver faster releases without compromising on quality. By implementing qTest, Tosca, and NeoLoad, VodafoneZiggo transformed its approach to quality assurance, achieving a balance between efficiency and excellence.

VodafoneZiggo is a leading Dutch company that provides fixed, mobile, and integrated communication and entertainment services to millions of customers. With a complex application landscape consisting of over 200 interconnected systems, the company constantly seeks to deliver innovative solutions to its customers. This requires a robust quality assurance strategy to ensure that every release meets high standards of performance, reliability, and speed.

Striking the balance between quality and speed

“Quality has always been a priority for us,” says Sander Korstanje, Technical Platform Lead Tech Test Practices at VodafoneZiggo. “But we’ve realized that focusing solely on quality at the expense of speed was holding us back. We needed to reduce time-to-market while maintaining our low defect rates.” This shift prompted the company to embed testing within the agile development process, with the goal of enabling squads to deliver more frequent and reliable releases.

Before implementing Tricentis solutions, VodafoneZiggo faced several challenges:

  • Manual testing bottlenecks: Testing processes relied heavily on manual efforts, which slowed down releases and created inefficiencies.
  • Limited automation expertise: Attempts to automate using tools like Selenium and Cypress failed due to their complexity and the team’s limited coding experience.
  • Fragmented testing tools: The use of Excel for test management resulted in version control issues and inefficiencies.
  • Lack of performance testing capabilities: Performance and load testing were outsourced to external vendors, leading to high costs and delays.

VodafoneZiggo adopted Tricentis Tosca, qTest, and NeoLoad to address these challenges, each tailored to specific needs:

  • Tosca: Chosen for its no-code capabilities, Tosca allowed teams to automate repetitive and complex end-to-end test scenarios across their diverse application landscape. “Tosca’s ability to handle our integrations and complex workflows made it an obvious choice,” explained Korstanje.
  • qTest: This solution replaced Excel and provided a centralized test management platform. Its API integration with Tosca streamlined automation processes and enhanced collaboration between squads.
  • NeoLoad: Implemented to build in-house performance testing capabilities, NeoLoad proved easy to use and integrate into pipelines, saving significant time and costs.

Building internal expertise

VodafoneZiggo adopted a self-service approach for implementation, enabling squads to take ownership of their testing. Korstanje and his team set up a platform-as-a-service model for Tosca and NeoLoad, ensuring that squads could automate and execute tests independently after completing Tricentis-provided training. “We focused on empowering squads to manage their own testing. The no-code nature of Tosca made this transition seamless,” said Korstanje.

For the initial setup, VodafonaZiggo worked closely with Tricentis Customer Success engineers, who provided guidance on technical design and integration. However, the actual configuration and automation were handled internally, reflecting the company’s commitment to self-reliance and internal expertise.

Results

The adoption of Tricentis solutions has yielded measurable benefits:

  • Accelerated time-to-market: Automation reduced the time required for testing, enabling squads to release more frequently and align with agile methodologies.
  • Cost savings: By building in-house performance testing capabilities with NeoLoad, VodafoneZiggo recouped the tool’s investment within three months.
  • Improved collaboration: Centralized test management through qTest fostered better coordination between squads, ensuring consistent quality across all applications.
  • Scalability: The self-service platform model empowered teams to scale their testing efforts without reliance on external vendors.

Sander Korstanje has set up a lot of initiatives around the Tricentis test suite. In all, around 90 test and test automation engineers now have access to the Tricentis products at VodafoneZiggo. As new people join the team, they are asked to follow the standard practices, for instance using the integration workflow between Jira and qTest. Squads are now also using the integration between Neoload and Git.

Future plans

Looking ahead, VodafoneZiggo plans to further embed performance testing into squad workflows and expand its use of Tricentis solutions. “Our goal is to enable every squad to fully own their testing processes, from automation to load testing,” said Korstanje. Additionally, the company aims to enhance integration between the tools, enabling even smoother workflows and faster feedback loops.

VodafoneZiggo’s experience with Tricentis solutions highlights the impact of a structured approach to test automation and quality assurance. By introducing tools like Tosca, qTest, and NeoLoad, the company has been able to balance the need for both quality and speed in software development. While challenges remain, the shift toward a self-service testing model has already delivered tangible benefits. As VodafoneZiggo continues to refine its processes, the focus will remain on enabling teams to take ownership of quality assurance while keeping up with the increasing pace of development.
