Tricentis Releases New Research on The Rise of Enterprise Application Testing

Mountain View, Calif. – Nov. 17, 2020 – Tricentis, the world’s #1 testing platform for modern cloud and enterprise applications, has released new research in partnership with Nimbus Ninety that highlights a mounting imperative to extend modern quality strategies across the enterprise application landscape, from SAP to Salesforce and beyond. The report, titled “The Rise of Enterprise Application Testing,” examines the market forces that have given rise to this trend and shares the strategies leading organizations have implemented to achieve continuous business innovation.

As digital disruption continues to fundamentally reshape the business landscape, enterprises are ramping up plans for cloud migration, DevOps transformation, and enterprise application modernization. As an organization’s digital core, enterprise applications build the foundations for wider digital transformation strategies and business process innovation at scale. But because major updates across these mission-critical applications pose significant risks to business continuity, testing is non-negotiable. For many organizations, testing has also represented the most significant delay in the process.

The average organization uses more than 900 applications today, according to MuleSoft’s 2020 Connectivity Benchmark, and a single business workflow might touch dozens of these applications via microservices and APIs. Testers must ensure none of those workflows are impacted when any one of these applications is updated. Tests must work across multiple technologies and interfaces – which are often evolving in parallel – and across a combination of on-premise, public, and private cloud environments.

“As the research highlights, traditional testing methods are no longer suitable for today’s complex, rapidly evolving IT landscapes,” said Chris Trueman, SVP of Product Management, Tricentis. “To meet increased demands on testing, technology leaders must extend the continuous testing processes that have transformed traditional software development across the enterprise application landscape.”

Drawing on interviews with enterprise testing and technology leaders from leading global enterprises, this report examines best practices that are helping organizations scale enterprise application testing to meet today’s business demands. Highlights include:

  • Extending Agile and DevOps principles across the enterprise application landscape
  • Enabling business users with domain expertise to contribute to testing
  • Using smart technologies to cover more business risk with less testing
  • Addressing the test automation skills gap
  • Developing processes that verify functionality before, during, and after a major upgrade or migration
